Moving Furniture: Doing It Yourself

For those about to move home, the prospect of moving your furniture can be daunting. Typically among the heaviest items in the house, your beds, chairs, wardrobes and bookcases might be the largest and most awkward to move things which you own. Not only are these items difficult to move in and of themselves, but the house itself might act against you. With doors fixed in their place, it can often be incredibly tough to remember how you got the piece into the room in the first place. By following a few steps, however, you can ensure that your furniture can be moved as easily as possible.

The most important thing to do – and this will come as no surprise – is to plan. Plan everything.

Take a tape measure and calculate the best route through the house, the best angle of the piece, the best approach, where you need to position people, how you will make it to the next room, everything. This should be planned like a bank robbery, because failure to do so will often find you in a doorway, with a bed tilted at an angle, struggling to remember how the hell this bed even got into the house. Starting in the room where the piece is, walk through first on your own, all the way to where the removal van will be. Get a clear picture in your mind’s eye of where you need to go and how you need to position yourself. If you have somehow convinced a friend to help, communicate your plan completely to each other, making sure that you know what each other is doing and that all of you are on board with the plan. With the whole process likely to be long and tiring, a good plan can make everything a lot easier.

One of the most vital, and often the most overlooked, things to consider when figuring out how to move your furniture, is to remember how to correctly lift and protect yourself. Without correct lifting technique, you can put undue pressure on your back. When it comes to heavy lifting, this can have potentially damaging effects. Researching correct lifting technique and even getting protective gear like gloves, can do a huge amount when it comes to protecting yourself against possible injury.

For maybe the easiest way to move your furniture, rather than lifting everything up and shifting it, it might just be simpler to take each item apart and transport the pieces individually.

For things such as beds, a simple tools kit can often allow you to undo bolts and nuts and take apart the individual pieces which are pieced together to make the bed itself. If you are going to do this – and it does not work for every object – then it is important to remember how to put the pieces back together. Taking detailed notes while you deconstruct an object can help with the process of putting it back together.

Of course, if you find that taking the furniture away is potentially too difficult, you might want to have a word with the next occupants of the property. If you are having a great deal of trouble moving something out, they might have an equal amount of trouble moving something back in. As such, they might appreciate having some furniture which is preinstalled. When it comes to the easiest way to move the furniture in your home, the simplest way is to not move it at all. By leaving behind those difficult pieces, you could not only be doing yourself a favour, but doing a favour to the next occupants as well.
