Side Effects Of Moving Away

There are some things that people don’t tell you about moving house. These are the side effects that people suffer either individually or in groups. Sometimes big, sometimes small, they are there to remind you that you are no longer in the place where you are used to. You are out of your comfort zone and a variety of thoughts will come to assault your peace of mind. But simply suffering them will do you no good – they will keep plaguing your thoughts and even if you don’t actively think about it, your subconscience will still be troubled. Identifying them is the key to finding the peace you seek.

  • Feeling of guilt

You are leaving everybody and everything behind. You must understand that relocation, and more precisely, moving away from your family is an egotistical choice. You want to prosper, you want freedom, and you want to do it all on your own. These desires are personal and therefore egotistical, as they should be. By moving away you say goodbye to the old life and that might make you feel as if you are abandoning everybody in it. That is not the case – there is no old life, you are simply opening a new chapter in your current one. Everybody and everything will still be where you left it.

  • Feeling of nostalgia

Every now and then after moving house you will be assaulted by feelings of nostalgia. Speaking to friends or parents, looking at pictures, or just sitting and thinking about the life you left behind will fill you with nostalgia. You will get urges to go back and live life as you have up until now, but that means going back. Fight off such urges if you are having a good life after the relocation and the only problems are the desires to rewind the clock.

  • Fear of the unknown

When the removal van comes to take your belongings and later when the movers drop them off at your new place, you will feel a certain anxiety. This is the natural fear of not knowing what tomorrow will bring. You will no longer reside with the people who arranged that tomorrow and gave you the security you need to abuse your freedom. This feeling is not something you have to give in to. It is the same as stepping into an unknown room – the second you are there you just have to look around to acquaint yourself with the room and then you will be fine. So when you start that new chapter, all you have to do is explore and that feeling will go away as swiftly as it appeared.

  • Fear of not being accepted

When going to a new place, everybody has the fear of becoming an outsider in that community. This is easily fixed with being sociable. It is pointless to dwell on such a fear without first getting introduced to the community there. Being an outsider is a choice and not something that you end up being forced into. Once you arrive at your new location, you can start talking to people and making new friends and that fear will dissolve completely.

  • Fear of disappointment

And last, but not least, is the biggest fear of all – the constant nagging that it is possible that you made a wrong choice. This is a ubiquitous fear that resides in your mind for every single choice you make during your lifetime. It is next to pointless thinking about it and the best you can do to dispel it is to get yourself occupied and let your life just play out. As they say, “Que sera sera!”, so wasting time pondering on what ifs is meaningless.

These side effects are mostly inevitable for every move, so don’t worry too much about them. Make your moving checklist and plan out the move itself with the removal company, and just let the dominos fall as they would.
