How To Master Your Student Move

Moving is often considered to be one of the most stressful times for a household, though when you’re a student it is often more of an inconvenience than anything else. That’s why the quicker you get it done the better.

So if you want to master your student move and make sure that you don’t waste any of your summer holiday lugging useless junk around, follow the below guide and you can be off on your travels in no time at all.

1. Plan (Don’t Leave It All To The Last Minute!)
If you think that you can sort everything at the last minute then think again as even small removals need a little bit of planning. Even if it’s just five minutes of your time, this can save you from a whole load of problems when it comes to the big day. Remember to try and get packing materials ahead of the day and try to work out a mode of transport so you don’t have to borrow that shopping trolley! If you live in a shared house then making plans together can help to save money and hassle – you might even be able to afford a man and van service if you put your funds together.

2. Pack (Don’t Just Shove Things Into Random Black Bags!)
It may sound like a simple step to remember but many people underestimate just how long it’s going to take to pack. As a result, many house removals are completed in a last minute panic with delicate kitchen items shoved into the nearest carrier bags. If you haven’t planned ahead then you may also find that you’ve run out of useful storage boxes or packing materials to use so you have no other option but to panic! To avoid this, start to pack at least a couple of days before your move. This way you will have a better idea of how many removal boxes you are going to need and plenty of time to source some if you haven’t got enough. Remember to leave all essential items to the last minute and to label your boxes as you go! While it may take a little bit longer, you’ll thank yourself when it comes to the unpacking!

3. Get Help (Don’t Do It All By Yourself On Foot!)
If you can’t afford to hire a man and a van service or removal company to help you with your move then this doesn’t mean that you have to do it all by yourself. Plan ahead with your friends and try to find some transport so that you don’t have to spend hours lugging suitcases on foot. If one of you has a car then use this to make trips to and from your new address, if you don’t have a car then it might be time to give good old mum and dad a call. Clothes, books and small pieces of furniture should all fit easily in a small car or taxi, larger non-essential pieces of furniture may need to be left behind if you can’t find a way to move them. Some landlords are happy for people to leave furniture behind as it can be useful for the next tenants to use. If it’s a problem then you could always donate it to a good cause.

4. Unpack (Before The House Warming Party!)
Once you’ve moved all of your stuff into your new flat or house, it is tempting to sit back and get on with the housewarming. However, while unpacking isn’t fun at the best of times, it is even worse when you’ve got a hangover. So face those boxes early on and then crack on with the party. If you labelled your storage boxes then it won’t even take long to sort out and you’ll be pleased with yourself when it comes to the morning after the night before!
