When You're a Student Moving, Be Prepared for Awkward Companies

So you're moving out of your present accommodation and looking forward and with some excitement to moving into your new accommodation or, perhaps, you have mixed feelings because you have to move back home. Whatever your exact situation is, there will be some things you just have to do before you leave whether it's defrosting the freezer, getting your accommodation nice and clean or telling everyone that needs to be told that you are moving address and, depending if you like them or not, let them know your new address.

You will have a lot to do in the build up to your move as you're no doubt aware of already. One area of moving home and duties to do you should pay particular attention to is subscriptions. In particular, TV packages you may have because although this might at first seem like a straightforward case of phoning people up and telling them your moving address, many people have had experience that, for whatever reason, things are not done on time and you end up paying more than you need to either because your present subscription hasn't been cancelled properly or there has been some 'miscommunication' which again means you end up paying more than you expect.

So contacting your TV subscription or it may be your Internet provider, should be done sooner rather than later just to make sure that if any problems do arise, you have time to sort them out before you leave your present address.

Likewise, make sure there is no misunderstanding with your energy company. That they know exactly what the situation is of you leaving and moving elsewhere. Whenever you can, get everything in writing and keep all correspondence so no one can then blame you for not doing things right. It's simply a case of it being better safe than sorry and not underestimating how much your moving home process can be disrupted by something simple, or rather something that should have been as simple, as cancelling a subscription.

It's often something which is least expected to be trouble for you that ends up giving your student move a sour note.

Also, as a student, if you have any shared bills with people, these too need to be sorted out. The advice here is not to put off till the last minute what you can do sooner, so that other people know where you stand and in turn it makes for an easier student move. Remember as well to notify your library and make sure you take those books back and in plenty of time to do so. With so much to do you can easily forget about your library books being overdue and then you find yourself on moving day, moving to a different area and you still haven't taken your books back which can lead to unwanted and unnecessary fines.

Another tricky company you may have to deal with is your phone company. This includes your mobile phone company who may have need of a change of address or you can find that some mobile services don't work when there is a conflict between you having your old address on one service and your new address on others. You may know yourself of companies you're dealing with who could be potentially difficult and it's why as soon as you know you're moving you have to contact them well in advance just in case they come back to you later on with some 'regulation' in your contract that means you have to pay extra money. If you're a student, and your finances are tied to a tight budget then these are hassles you can do without. The sooner you deal with them the better.
